A standard professional indemnity policy provides coverage for the firm or company, its employees, and usually extends to cover sub consultants employed or acting on behalf of the firm.
The policy provides coverage for claims against the firm or an individual, alleging breach of professional duty.
Standard policies are "negligence" policies specifying that the policy responds to claims arising from negligent acts errors or omissions. Some broader policies provide cover for full "civil liability".
Legal costs are incurred in defending a claim as described above. The written agreement of insurers usually needs to be granted before costs are accepted as covered.
Depending on the scope of cover other elements of professional risk are covered, either automatically, or as extensions to the policy. These include:
- Libel & slander.
- Liability for loss of documents.
- Breach of confidentiality.
- Breach of copyright (unintentionally).
- Liability arising from dishonesty of employees.
- Breach of warranty of authority.
